Cerritos is a relatively affluent suburb located in Los Angeles County on the border with Orange County. And it is this advantageous location that makes it such a great place to live. It is directly served by three major freeways – the 5, the 605 and the 91 – which make it easy to get to and from all of Southern California. The ease of access has been a boon to two of its biggest sources of tax revenue – the Los Cerritos Center (aka “the mall”) and the Cerritos Auto Square. People come from all around to spend their money here, providing a very healthy tax base which allows the city to spend more on community development. These developments include the city library which is an outstanding example of what libraries should be in today’s world. Also the Center for the Performing Arts which is the Southland’s premier performing arts and conference facility offering great performances in music, dance and theater as well as facilities for banquets, meetings and special events. If you haven’t caught a show or performance here before, you owe it to yourself to check it out, you won’t be disappointed! The city also provides 28 parks and recreation facilities with playing courts, athletic fields, a skate park, and even an olympic sized swimming pool. Families are enticed to buy homes here due to the outstanding ABC Unified School District and Community College.
Location, Location, Location!!! It’s served directly by three major freeways (the 5, 605 and 91) and it’s just a short drive from the 405 freeway which makes it a breeze to get anywhere you might want to go in Southern California. It’s less than 20 minutes away from Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, or our gorgeous local beaches. Before you do that, though, you might want to spend some time at one of the 28 parks the city maintains. They have places you can swim, skateboard, play soccer, baseball and more, take a leisurely stroll or take pictures. Heritage Park, in particular, is a great place for photography due to its unique Play Island which provides many nice backdrops for photos – it is an especially popular spot for prom pictures. If getting even closer to nature is your thing, you have a number of places to choose from: you can drive down to the beach and enjoy the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge or Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve or you can go to the nearby El Dorado Nature Center. Also, the Aquarium of the Pacific is a short drive from here. Or if you’re looking for a more “cultured” experience, visit the public library or take in dinner and show at the Performing Arts Center. You can also visit the mall or the Cerritos Towne Center and do some shopping, take in a movie, and grab something to eat.
Cerritos is no slouch when it comes to educating your children. Most of the public schools are highly rated by greatschools.org – garnering 9’s and 10’s on a scale of 1 – 10. In fact, many of our clients who are looking to buy a home in here, cite Whitney High School as their reason for doing so. Both Whitney High School and Cerritos High School consistently score well above state averages. In addition to the great public schools, many private school options are available to residents as well. Schools such as Valley Christian High School and Middle School also provide quality education experiences.
I don’t have room enough to get into detail about all of the great restaurants this city has to offer but I want to mention some of my favorites. For outstanding pizza and casual Italian, Frantones Pizza and Spaghetti Villa is the place to go – especially for lunch. For a great steak in a rustic atmosphere, I really enjoy Clearman’s North Woods Inn (I know, technically it’s in La Mirada but it’s close enough to be included here.) Or bring your dog to lunch at the Lazy Dog restaurant at the mall. Got a hankering for some tasty barbecue? Head on over to Wood Ranch where they have everything from BBQ Potato Skins to brisket, ribs, chicken and more all slathered in their original barbecue sauce. And if your looking for GREAT Mexican food, you can’t miss Amor Y Tacos – but be prepared to wait, the line is often out the door within people craving their gourmet spin on traditional Mexican favorites!
